OK, are there other forms of
Oh, right Are there are the other forms of Chan we didn’t try today
There are many many ways of Chan meditation
What you experience day today is veryBasic and very beginning level of methods
Patriarch Chan is at the core of the traditional Chinese Chan
This method is very applicable in everyday life It’s practiced,
very practical You can apply it in everything you do in life
So if you’re interested in this particular method,
Patriarch Chan We welcome you to come back and experience more,
and explore more, and learn more in the future
Today, the first thing that we’re experiencing, we’re trying to let you experience,
is how to relax Relaxing the mind, relaxing the body
Relaxation is very important in our modern life
Most of us are unaware that we’re constantly living in Pressure or living in stress to the extent that we’re clearly unaware of the level of stress that we’re living under
We learned to relax
The relaxation is not only the necessary foundation for further Chan practice,
but it’s also important in our everyday life
Besides relaxation, today, our design is also to help to help you to experience focus or concentration
I hope that you’ve gain something Valuable from today’s experience of relaxation and concentration on these two topics
Relaxation and concentration are not two, these two are not only fundamental For our Chan practice,
the in patriarch Chan, but it’s fundamental in every single Chan or meditative practice
Answer your questions
Next one
Hello Yeah Ha
I was wondering because you said you talked about relaxation,
and if you have a life that kind of requires you to walk fast
How would you say you can practice being relaxed when walk walking fast in a good way
So this is why concentration is equally important
To relaxation, and because typically when we concentrate,
we’re in a very tense state
Modern life has a very strong emphasis on effectiveness and achieving our goals
So oftentimes concentration becomes
How can I quickly get there do it and be done
Yeah typically when we try to need to do something quickly and effectively it tends to be in a tense way
So, it’s, we’re unable to relax
So one of the fundamental Chan practices that we experience together today is learning to concentrate and still be relaxed Be relaxed and still focused
So,
I really wanna sincerely invite everybody to continue to learn about Chan practice
You’ll discover if you continue to practice that you’re able to do things quickly and effectively,
but stay relaxed in the process
And that’s one of the things that Chan can bring us Chan practice
We may think oh that’s impossible
How can I be quick and effective and relaxed at the same time
So our teacher saying just means you haven’t experienced enough chan Practice yet
So we like to invite you to con- to continue to explore Chan As your time and circumstances allow,
and you you’ll find that, oh,
I can be effective, and even encounter obstacles,
and stay relaxed in the process
That answer your question
Does it work
Oh yeah To to what extent is Chan,
and what we did today religion related
Chan is not related to the religion, but the Buddhism practice Chan a lot,
so most people were related Chan to Buddhism
There are many ways or other religion, they also practice meditation
Maybe they will use different name, some cold meditation,
or zen, or chan
Um,
I remember about, around
10
years ago,
I follow my shi fu, and go to the Europe to teach meditation
Our our students
They included Cath- Catholic nouns
They are from other maybe from the Catholic religion
So, the participants are not only Buddhist followers,
but included Christian priest, nuns, Catholic nuns orDifferent follower or practitioners from different religion
Actually, chain is everything in the world It’s included everything
Once there are visible, it included visible phenomenon as well as invisible phenomenon
So, it it includes everything from mental, physical or spiritual phenomenon or natural phenomenon That’s all part of Chan,
part of Dharma
Chain is a way that help us to experience the essence truth
Turn is a way is a way for us to To experience through the method,
through our practice, to really go and into direct experi- di- directly experience in the essence and the truth Behind all phenomenon
So, how, it depends on your religion
How it will matters how you think where the chan is related to the religion
So whether chan is related to religion or not,
it all depends on what your beliefs are It,
in essence, it is a way to truth,
and truth has no religion
But if you have religion, if you have different beliefs,
it can also be, it’s not excluding religion,
religious belief
Chairs, say something
You you are you second time to here
So, as time spread across China and to Japan as well,
it resulted in, you know, many different sects and many Schools of belief
Does it matter what the lineage is
How do we choose, you know, where to learn,
where to practice
How do we differentiate between
Yeah, what what is the right place for us to learn,
the right way for us to practice
There’s no one right method of practice or right sect It really is more a personal thing of what resonates with you
Feel it resonates with you, that may be the right method for you
And there’s no correctness that we we don’t pursue correctness in this practice
But, it it
Has to come from how you experience and how you feel inside That’s the main,
your direct experience should be your teacher
Yeah, Chan has developed over time to have many different methods,
many different ways of practicing, many different sex
But all of these were a result in a Reflection and reaction to the time,
the culture, the space of the time, and and what people actually needed in their practice
So, it was adapting, constantly adapting to people’s needs
Even though there’re now many different methods of practice,
the fundamental philosophy and sort of core tenets of practice and belief are the same
It’s kind of like the same water, but contained in different kind of cups,
different style of cups The cups are different,
but the water is the same
I think Chan practice is very much focused on helping you to like Jason said earlier encounter truth
So whatever method works for you
Is the right method
OK Anyone
I I
好奇
Was it too long
Or especially those of you who have not sat before Curious
Can I ask a question
Please I’m just curious because we added today this kind of delving more into the sitting posture and kind of going into details about that
Just curious how how everyone’s seat was, physically
Was that helpful
Yes, please Regarding the method, especially how to city meditation
Do you have any Confusing or problem, tro-
Please
It was very helpful with this Blanket over your hands
Before, when you were meditating, you feel like your hand were like empty underneath,
and you feel like you have to use muscle force in order to keep it in position or what
Oh, it is
So, sitting meditation is a particular form of practice
And so, the most important thing about the form is that you are comfortable and able to use the method of practice,
and that the body is not interfering with that
So the goal of you know sitting meditation is not to see who can do lotus the best,
or have your posture the straightest or the strongest
Or sit the longest It really is about,
are you sitting in a way that supports your practice,
that allows your mind to come come back to the breath
And and as we talked about earlier
So, there is a main point that Jason just mentioned Don’t be attached to particular forms,
like all the form, all the detail instruction about where you put position your body All these is meant to help you to enter into the practice To be able to do the practice of the mind
So, it doesn’t matter, the the external form,
the external body position
You just need to find the most comfortable way for you to be able to use the method For your mind to be able to use the method,
that’s the key, not the bodily position
When the Buddha started to, he decided to to pursue the essence truth
He spent around
6
years To do, a very hard practice Shakyamuni Buddha
Do, they have to, they think if they want to have a strong mind,
they have to torture their body
They thought torturing their body is a way of breaking the limitation that is placed on their mind
They thought it as a way of liberating themselves from the bodily,
the physical confinement
However
After 6
years, he used the strong, hard and ascetic meditation
He found that’s the Wrong way, so he gave up
He found it’s a wrong way, because it didn’t help him,
it didn’t liberate him from the limitation of life,
from the s- of the The on freedom,
you know, he didn’t he didn’t find a way to liberate himself from the confinement,
whatever confined him That’s why he
He was determined that that was the wrong way to achieve the truth
There was a at the time, there was a very Misconception about spiritual practice is that it’s a matter of will
If I can just overcome physical suffering as a matter of will
Then,
I will be liberated
So, the the the style at the time was to torture yourself,
and to develop that will
But over six years of very extreme self mutilation and torture and denial,
he discovered that’s not the way
It just like you play the instrument with string
You cannot make the string too too tight or too tense
Or you cannot make the string too loose
You have to give give the string a middle tension
Then you can play music
Any others
Just one more for me
So, what would you say is the ultimate goal of meditation
I I know in the beginning There’s a challenge of trying to relax and concentrate,
and still our mind, and and so on
But what are we working towards
Eventually like is it is it enlightenment or how do you deal with this um sense of frustration that we’re not making progress or we don’t know what progress we’re trying to ach- Achieve
So, the ultimate purpose of our practice is to experience,
directly experience and see our true nature
So, what I said earlier about relaxation and concentration,
that’s step one
The most basic step one
Only the beginning
Yeah The foundation practice
So, there are deeper practices, some involving continually asking the same question,
and some involving awareness with Wisdom
And including the practice this afternoon where we chanted the Maha Prajna Paramita That’s also another form of deeper practice
All three of these methods that
I just mentioned are ways to help us directly encounter truth to feel it and experience it for ourselves
And that is truly part of the patriarchal Chan method
So a lot of the practices we did today are helping us prepare To begin to use the methods that
I mentioned earlier about, either repeating the same question or awareness with wisdom
So, this this ultimate aim is important, because it will help us to experience and see for ourselves how things really are,
how phenomena, how the world really is
All the things that you see right now,
including seeing me sitting here, it’s form of an illusion
Because we don’t know this truth and we don’t truly see it
We assume the illusion is real, and then spend our lives up and down in different kinds of suffering
Before you know it, life’s over
We all clearly see Jason sitting there
Why Does he say it’s an illusion
Because we all have a sense of self,
and we’re all looking at Jason from this self,
from the filter of this self
But the self is an illusion, so all things that we see from the illusion are also illusions
It’s not real
So, in the practice, if you can awaken to this illusion of the self,
then you will no longer do all the things that you do Out of that illusion,
and you will be able to be liberated or enlightened
Once you have experienced directly the elusiveness of the self,
then you have seen the true nature Of Things,
and therefore, you would no longer be Experiencing and perceiving the world
Through the illusory lens of the self, and therefore,
you’re go- going to start to see the true nature of everything,
and ge- get liberated from
From these illusions that, or liberated from more like a dream
you will be awakened from that dream of the self
I just said all these phenomena in the self are all illusory
So, what’s real then
Right now we don’t know but we wanna find out
So that is the process of investigating Chan Investigating Chan
Now
So if you’d like to find out more whether this Jason is really real or illusory
We welcome you to come back and practice some more,
and find out for yourself
Please
I have two two two questions
I understands that the method is investigate and seek the truth or help the self,
but I still don’t understand what’s the purpose or goal
Of this, and is this kind of activity can realistically helps the others of the world For example,
when I come here last time, for English,
to, literate,
I met a a Israel boy
And he says, oh, we are doing good things
We are bombing Gaza, it is right, not only if it is doing right
So After after many many meditation, and if this kind of action doesn’t reallyHelp the others,
I still don’t know the purpose
But it it it it’s help the self,
but I feel it did doesn’t the electricity help the others
Yes yes yes
So
The f-, the first sort of benefit of practice is ourselves,
that we can liberate from suffering, we can awaken to the truth
When you dive deeper into practice, even before full liberation or enlightenment,
you will experience and find changes within yourself
And your own Buddha nature starting to flower
Most important elements, one is wisdom, and the other is compassion
When we begin to exhibit the wisdom and the compassion
We will find that we truly want to from within our heart help others to achieve the same kind of liberation
And
So many sorts of positive energy will authentically come from this sort of tran- inner transformation,
includingMaking vows to help others, having more space to include others within ourselves,
and knowing, having the wisdom of
How and what to do for others as well as having true compassion for the situation of others
So, and this kind of wisdom, when it arises,
helps us to know what to do with others that’s appropriate,
and just ri- right to the point that can help to pull us all together rather than creating more conflict
You mentioned the conflict in Gaza, and Jason is describing that at its core is still intolerance and
When we think we are absolutely right, and someone else then is absolutely wrong,
and the conflict that arises from this kind of inflexibility
So, we all came together today here in this Chan Hall,
and in this Buddhist temple
So, he’s encouraging that, as part of the practice,
it’s very important to trust
And have faith in the practice that it is
Can completely liberate us from suffering
So, we can make a vow for ourselves and for others that as we deepen in our practice,
that this practice can both liberate ourselves
But drive us to help, and the people around us,
and even the world
In the history of Buddhism there haven’t been conflicts with other religions and wars that things of that sort
Yeah In the history of Buddhism there haven’t been conflicts with other religions and wars that things of that sort
Yeah
So, the teachings of Buddhism can help us to completely and thoroughly overcome all aspects of human suffering
Through this, we are able to completely and overcome the Problems or the suffering that we see in the world
Your second question
Or do you wanna further your question
Yes, father Yes
Yeah, thank you for your answer
I think I still don’t have tolerance forLike admitting many Palestinian people are killed is like right,
but it it it’s
OK anymore For another question is
I sometimes come here, because my home is very near
And I wonder this temple has none andMonk together Usually,
the temple only women or only men
So,
I thought it’s very unique, and
I wonder why this
From the temples that you experienced in the past,
is either male or female, but this one is combined,
right
This is very common in Taiwan
In fact, yeah, most of the temples here in Taiwan or Buddhist temples,
we have both nun and monks
There are few that are exclusively nun or primarily nuns or primarily Monks,
but many of them are like this They’re,
yeah, they’re mixed gendered
Well, in the traditional Han, or
I mean, in the traditional Chinese Buddhist tradition,
it is true that, you know,Especially in Korea,
Japan and Vietnam, it is true that many monks,
sorry, many temples are traditionally there, it’s either nun or monks,
they are not mixed It is true
However, now in Taiwan
Because Taiwan is quite small, so, the temple always,
they maybe they need more people to join
So, they welcome both male and female people to To go to the monastery monastery
Yeah
And also the female has quite good ability
So we welcome more and more female to join the temple
I said with women’s rights, and also many wi-,
female practitioners are truly wonderful in their practice
So he said it’s very natural that both men and women are s- are equally seen in the temples here
I think female has more compassion, and have a bigger view for,
they they are more willing to To to to provide their,
provide their their ability
Yeah, they have more ability and more compassionate
So, there, even is there are more female than male in the temple
Because female are more willing to do more things for the religion and for the temple
In China, there is a pri-, president, be-,
ex-, president, Mao Mao Mao Zedong
Yeah, he has s- say that the female can
Can support most of the support most of the Said women lift up half the sky
Famous saying My observation is already over half of the sky
Jason’s ob- observation he says
Maybe more than half
Yeah, so I
I guess this is kind of like a follow up question from Charles’s question previously
So,
I was just wondering would it be incorrect or or a misconception To think of Chan as a way to perceive in a peace or calm,
but rather is actually something that you know cultivates us to
You know, stay more aware of the changing variables in the surroundings or you know,
any thoughts or emotions that rises upon our minds
Yeah, which is you know, the ultimate way to you know,
end the suffering from pain
Yeah, or would that also be a stereotype
Because I guess in a way, s-, in the peace is also required in order to end the suffering,
right So, w-, is that contradictory or is that just a s-,
misconception or stereotype
OK
Traditional, the Chinese tradition, the Chan tradition, is what we call the Mahayana tradition Mahayana means the great vehicle
And in the Mahayana tradition, the one of the very essential principle is that we do not only seek the liberation of ourselves
But we are, we vow to help, to achieve,
to help the liberation of all sentient being
So, the Mahayana, in the Mahayana tradition, the way of practice we call it the bodhisattva’s way,
the way of the bodhisattva
In the way of the bodhisattva, there are A few main the the spirit first is it does not seek denouncing Daily life,
or we say worldly life, it does not denounce that,
it actually goes deep into the world, into the crowd To help,
to be with sentient beings
This is number one
And another one is like we said before,
it’s it vows to help others, to help sentient being in every way they
They need help from, and also, it is a selfless help It does not put,
it does not have a notion of self
In this process of helping, so there’s no self helping others,
just help
So, in Taiwan, the Mahayana tradition is particularly widespread and popular,
and it has gone
Or maybe we should say created a new a new way what we called the The Buddhism in ordinary life,
the Dharma that’s practice in everyday ordinary life
A good example is, as you probably all know,
a few days ago in Hualian, Guangfu County,
there was a very serious natural disaster
Where many people are killed, and many people are stranded,
their homes destroyed
And recently, I’ve seen on the news that manyindividuals in Taiwan,
they self initiated they self initiated the effort to go and help
They went on the train, bought their own rain boots,
their own equipment
They are going to Hualian to help those who are suffering from the disaster right now
And this is a good example of the spirit of the Bodhisattva
You, we go and help without thinking what we’re gaining from this
We go and help with a selflessness Without without any kind of without any kind of thoughts of repayment
So, when we practice Buddhism, eventually, that’s what we need to do,
is to go into the ordinary life, the world,
and help those who are in need Selflessly
The way of the bodhisattva, the spirit of the bodhisattva is that
We go and help others, even even before helping ourselves
Like, even though the ultimate purpose of our practice is to Directly experience and see our true nature,
and so called enlightenment
However, even before we’re enlightened ourselves, we put others first
We help other to achieve enlightenment first
We help others in need first, and disregard of our own Goal,
we put others in priority
This is the spirit of the Mahayana tradition,
the spirit of the Bodhisatta
Any other question
yes, thank you for your answer
I think what
I meant was more like when we are actually doing the practice,
do we always need to look for inner peace,
or it’s just basically Staying aware of everything we’re feeling
being aware of all these changing variables around us
The mo
,
The moment
,對
The moment The mo
In the Chan method of practice it’s very very important To continually come back to this moment,
being very clear and aware of what’s happening this moment,
then the next moment, this moment, this moment
This moment, and that can help us to avoid being taken over by thoughts
Which then lead to suffering
So whenever we notice coming back coming back coming back to the present moment
Your inner peace part of your question, did that get answered About the inner peace part,
did that get answered
Or do you want it to further that part
Yeah,
I think that answer my question
OK Yeah Thanks
Any else Please
Sun Contemplation
Maha Prajna Paramita
same as we are reciting amitabha buddha
Is that is the same function I’m not sure
OK, so the question is that, when we are doing the reciting practice this afternoon,
I’m not quite sure what is the key of the key of the practice,
the key of method
Is it that we should focusing on the sound,
the this reciting itself
Or shall we focus on the inner feeling that arises during the the chanting
Or is it the same is it the same way as when we recite the Amitabha
Is is it the same practice I’m not sure if
I can really nail the core
Or the key of the practice
Reciting Prajna Paramita
This this method that we practice today, regarding the chanting,
originated from the
6
th patriarch, and was mentioned in the Platform Sutra
But it’s been somewhat It’s been somewhat taken over by other more popular methods that we mentioned earlier,
like awareness with wisdom or investigating
Yeah, so, but it, but this is a wonderful method of practice
project promised
So, in the in the first stage of practice using this method,This was what we recited today was a mantra,
and in the first stage of practice, you want to simply just repeat it over and over and over until it’s truly ingrained in the heart
And once it’s ingrained in the heart, it will,
it’s almost like you’re not reciting it, it just recites itself
And at that stage, you you can experience some po- power from the mantra
So in the first stage of practice, it’s very similar to recitingAmitabha,
or certain buddhas
’ names
So, in the reciting Ami Tofu, Buddha’s name,
that method of practice is borrowing an externalPower
So it’s kind of like sending a line or making a phone call over and over you know like hey hey
I I reserve me a spot in you know
or the The western kingdom
Yeah so in the reciting the buddha’s name that particular practice is kind of like asking for help Asking someone outside to help us in our practice,
and take us to a place where we can practice more deeply
So in Chan practice, the focus is not on an external sorts of help
But power within The buddha said that we all have buddha nature,
meaning we are not different from him
So the Chan method of practice is seeking to foster and develop and bring out
That part of us which is the same as the Buddha
So the meaning of this mantra is infinite boundless wisdom that can bring us to the other shore
And, but in this case, in in this practice,
we are calling ourselves, calling, sending the message deep within,
to that part of us, which is just like the Buddha,
andInviting it, encouraging it, fostering it to come out
In this way, it’s kind of like Repeatedly calling ourselves,
waking ourselves up Hey, hey, hey, Buddha nature,
wake up, wake up, wake up, and calling our Buddha nature forth in this way
So, all the different methods of Chan practice we mentioned today,
they all share a common path of calling within and inviting
That part of us which is the same as the Buddha,
to flower, to come forth
aware what it is
So Chan practice is actually very simple it simply
Diving deeper with complete focus, seeking to connect with that part of ourselves that’s just like the Buddha
And that’s why in Chan, there’s what’s called sudden awakening
And it’s just like if you’ve been trying and trying and trying to unlock a box,
and then suddenly, oh, you got it
Or you’ve been trying and trying to connect a current or a wire,
and then all of a sudden you got it
So in China
So, even though Chan talks about sudden unlocking The box is very very difficult,
and there’s lots of lots of locks you can say,
so we do need to try very hard,
and and work and practice diligently in order to Unlock it in that moment
Pandora box So what I’m sharing today is just an overarching concept
There are many many details and actually Doing it so inviting everybody to come back and learn more about the actual ways that we can unlock this Pandora box within
Can discover whether this is real or not
sun contemplation
Silence Illumination
just sitting
seeing your nature
Sati Sati
silent illumination
Sati Sati SAT
I Vipassana Vipassana
sun contemplation
sun contemplation
enlightenment liberation
或者
seeing you a buddha nature
