Is question and answer We welcome any questions
We all welcome any kinds of questions about today’s your experience or any kinds of questions. Please now
Your question can be in Chinese or in English. We will we will translate either way
Don’t be shy
I was wondering I was wondering if we only observe and don’t judge
Then how do bad things change
If I see something bad happening, and I only observe, and I don’t judge it
I cannot help a person, for example, when a bad thing happens, or I cannot change anything, if I see this is obviously bad
So how does the Do the bad things changes if everybody thinks like that
This is a misunderstanding, when we say awareness or observation, it’s not to not participate, not care
Is this a
意思
So non judgment and non responding is to help us stabilize our emotions
The first step in practice is to be able to stabilize
The many emotions of the self
When we’re able to maintain stability in the face of emotions
Then we will still have
Appropriate responses to what we observe
This is what is so called deeper wisdom and observation insight
The awareness of wisdom is knowing when to respond when not to respond It does not indicate a total lack of response
For example maybe a child in the family falls down and cuts their head
When we see they’re injured of course we will respond appropriately to
Heal or ask for the requisite help
But our inner state is very stable throughout this process of responding
This is what we’re practicing in Chan
any questions
Just to follow up on that
So, wha- what kind of actions are not justified, you know, from a Chan perspective? Like, is war ever
Justified is that or does that cross the line of response
For example, when other people criticize me, or when they swear at me, something like that
We are fully aware of the meanings and the contents of what they just swore at us
Yeah it does not matter whether wha- whatever he or she said is right or wrong But we can always react in a way in a very calm manner keeping our minds stable
So, in other words, that means our emotions are not affected or fluctuated because of his actions or words
So, many, most of the time, well, many of the times, you know, the bad conditions or the dilemmas that we face, they can actually be brought down to a minimal level
And but s-, yeah, sometimes we cannot do that
So because of our attachments or desperate feelings we you know there many times we may let ourselves stay really attached deep down into the Conflict of the person who did these behavior to us
So through meditation practice we can train ourselves to try toBring the problem to a minimal level instead of getting involved and bring yourself down to their level Which creates the problem to become a bigger problem
If we can train our mindset to a really high and certain level, then we can react in a way that is full of wisdom, especially against when we’re facing these criticism
So by doing this, instead of letting ourselves getting involved in that negative loop of cycle, where we were just ha carrying on the argument with the person who criticize us
We can end it, and even more, we can also put the other person into a better state
Solving the conflict overall
Answer your questions
Not so
What about the question of war
Like
Yeah, why don’t you translate your own question
I think you try. I think he didn’t get what you’re asking
Unsatisfy, ha ha. Maybe go ahead, you follow your questions
should we should we
in chinese
it’s not that great. You try. No
defend ourselves or in war
or should we be pacifists
Is there any circumstance you know if for attacked
In most circumstances, when we feel we’re being attacked, it’s because we’ve taken an opposite stance from the other, and so we’ve Got caught in a circumstance of
One of the important aspects of practice, of tran practice is to help us transcend the tendency forDualities
This is a higher state of practice and an attitude to
Not take on
the duality
presented
As a new practitioner in Chan, when we are Attacked or face this kind of situation, it’s very uncomfortable
And one of the first things we need to practice to stop doing is the tendency to add harm to the harm that’s been done
Adding a second arrow, so to speak, to ourselves
So one of the first ways to practice is to see and stop these second arrows
Under the normal paradigm, when we are attacked, we should defend ourselves, and maybe even attack back
But oftentimes underneath this
Situation of conflict are many, many conditions of which the causes and effect we are unaware and don’t see clearly
And that, if we follow this typical worldly view of an eye for an eye, you know, defending or attacking back
An important piece of learning from the Buddha is to how can we Regardless of why it started it stops here with me
This doesn’t mean necessarily that I don’t respond But rather that my response is directed in a way that can reduce the conflict and to resolve the causes and effects in motion
OK
OK, so just to make the questions short
First, I like to know what are the ways for us to not fall into the trap
When we have emotion arising, so, when we’re, when we have all these emotion arising within ourselves, how do we not Fall into the trap
How do we not fall into it, fall into responding, and or go with it
That’s, for example, I deal with my kids every day, and when they have temper tantrum, when they are You know, in extreme chaos, and at the beginning, I may be able to s- keep my emotion stable
but after dealing with them for, after one hour, for example, they’re still In the intensive chaos, screaming or emotional, then I will feel like I’m losing my I’m losing my control, I’m at the verge of letting my emotion explode
So, and all this, I, another question I also have is then what is the relationship I have
How do we see our own emotion? What’s the relationship of me and my emotion
Your question really touched a core of Buddha Dharma, of Buddha’s teaching, and that is the question of I
ego eye
What is I what is ego
We normally don’t understand. We we completely misunderstand
We believe that this eye is solidly existing, is real
That’s why we have so many emotions and sufferings arising from this eye
Right as I’m sitting here I’m looking outside and I see the mountain I see the mountain but I wouldn’t say the mountain is me
But we will think our my emotion is part of me
Emotion like all phenomena is a result of codependent arising of many causes and conditions
If it arises the phenomenon then it will for sure pass
If it will arise, it will pass
However but with our emotion when it arises we don’t let it pass We immerse in it we make it stronger than it really is So we let it arise but we don’t we cling onto it we don’t let it pass
It is like all phenomena
If it’s a phenomenon, it’s it’s the coming together of causes and conditions, and they will arise, it will pass
I’ll give you another example
A cup can contain water or coffee or tea or juice
When it contains juice we cannot say this cup is juice
likewise if it contains coffee you cannot say it’s coffee
When you pour off when you empty the cup of water or juice or coffee then cup is still cup
The mistake that we often make Is that we don’t understand these content that’s in the cups
It can be emptied anytime, it can be changed anytime
What the mistake that we made is that we think it’s real, and it’s It’s there forever, or we have, we give it a stability. But when it can be changed, emptied anytime
What I’m trying to deliver or express here is that we often take what we sees what we experience
At this very moment, as real and lasting, but the truth is that it will change, it will come and go, and it is our mind that grasp it, that our mind that doesn’t let it go
So, all emotions that we experience, that arises, including all our, all the human nature that causes suffering, including the greed, rage
And ignorance that we often experience, we can also let these go
The ki-, with the issue with kids is that in their the process of their growing up, as kids, they’re naturally in a state of ignorance or non knowing
So, they will oftenCreate situation that makes us uncomfortable, but this also will pass
We may have forgotten that as we grew up ourselves we were like that once we created chaos we may be worse than them
What I meant is that we need to tolerate, embrace and
Allow them like all the things that all the behaviors or all the ignorant behaviors that they show or they have throughout their growing process
It is important that we give them the right guidance, the appropriate guidance at the right time
However, we have also to be aware not to deprive Them, the s-, the, you know the mistakes that they may make, the things that they want to try throughout the process, and stay with them
and give them The support and help when they needed, without depriving them, their the things that they would like to do as they grow up
I think if we can have more compassion tolerance and patience for our children then our own suffering our own
Our own problem will also, our own emotion will also reduce a lot
Of course this is for every one of us This is a process of learning And a process of practicing
I guess my conclusion to all this is face it, accept it as it comes, deal with it
And once you’re done dealing with it, let it go
OK, so I al- I often felt to myself that I’m always living in two different worlds
OK, one is that, in the in the environment that I can feel more relaxed and free while I’m not working
And the other one is that during work, where I have to face a lot of stress and a lot of emergencies, and com-, having to complete a lot of urgent tasks all the time
Which kind of makes myself feel difficult to be in a really calm and meditat- meditative state
So my question is that, should I actually change my job, or should I stay, no, just so that I can Keep myself always settled and calm in my in my mind
Or should I just do the same job and carry on and try to fight for it
OK so it could be a common misconception that you know once we’ve started practicing the chant and any forms then we can soon be free from any sufferings
Ok, so if you find yourself staying in the meditative state the whole time, during your entire lifetime, then that’s actually the wrong idea of practicing Chan, because that basically means You have ended your life
So, Chan is about, you know, being in a meditative state, and also being out of it interchangeably
So, most of the time, we might feel that our stress, our sufferings are all caused by external factors
But in fact it is more about the way we our mind reacts
OK so by that what I’m saying is basically all these sufferings and stress that you’re feeling during these moments
Is all caused by the fact that you are standing in the stance that is in the opposite side of the the causes of the stress
So this is when we have to look back into ourselves and do a bit of self reflection to see whether is it justMe, and my trying to make myself stay in the oppos- opposing stunts
and let the job affect me in this ser- serious way
So once you have done this little self assessment about whether I’m just you know letting the job affect me so much and then realizing that it is not but rather it is because that the contents or the level of the job is way beyond my abilities
So, if this is really the case, then perhaps it would be the time that you should consider perhaps funding a different career or different job opportunity
Where it fits its ability and your mind sit more
OK, so through the practice meditation, we can also cultivate and develop another skill, and that is to reduce the
The s- the sense of self, yeah, that lies within their minds
So once the sense of self has been reduced to a minimal level we may realize that it will no longer affect us as much as it used to be when we are actually putting ourselves in the Workplace environments that are causing stress for
ourselves This can be done through the practice of meditation
So, I would recommend you that since now that you have started doing try on practice, then it will be a good idea for you to carry on, as this will keep allowing yourself to cultivate such skills
And and enabling yourself to work more easily, and in a more comfortable manner, in whatever situations that you’re facing in the future
Follow follow up
follow up question to the previous if my work environment is extremely fast paced how am I supposed to stay aware
It’s so fast that my emotions don’t have time to even arise much less let go
Under this circumstance, it feels like something stuck inside
And so, I end up responding mostly on autopilot to lots of the things that are happening
I AI
This is probably something that we will all face more of in the future, especially with the development of AI. Replacing a lot of the human work
So fast or slow in it of itself is not bad
I would look at it more as a form of training we must undergo, because this current era is becoming quicker and quicker and faster and quicker tempoed
So, one of the first things we need to be aware of in this kind of fast pace environment is the appropriate and wise use of tools, including AI
So, I don’t know if your work allows for AI, but things of that like this
So we need to find the appropriate tools to help us fill in the gaps in that quick pace and And part of i- the wisdom and practice here is identifying the correct tools at our disposal
The other aspect here is the internal When we face this quick pace and this pressure how not to
Allow anxiety and negative emotions to overwhelm us, and cause us to disconnect from the reality we’re facing. This Chan practice can help in this way
One of the first thing that’s that Chan practice can help us with is knowing ourselves better
When we know ourselves better we will also be able to adapt and know how to adjust ourselves so that we can face reality in a better way
So many people in this current age are seeing psychologists and therapists
Many of the problems underneath this is because we’re unable to adapt and react to everything happening in our environment
So to solve this problem, the most important thing is to recognize and see clearly the heart, the self. And so in Chan
The primary thing we are doing in our practice is this
Now gyms and all sorts of athletic endeavors training our bodies is a very common andwidespread practice
muscle
Many people have big muscles and six pack and
But they have neglected to train their minds along with their bodies and so their minds are actually in a very fragile state
My suggestion is since you’ve had the opportunity to be here today to encounter Chan to continue this practice deepen your practice and strengthen your mind
When our mind is strong enough We can solve any problem overcome any obstacle and at the end there are like no problems
OK
So
So, if like you said, emotions or affliction, our emotions or our afflictions, none of them is part of me
Then, under this concept, what is me then
What is me
And or, me is only like the clean cup that you talk about, there’s nothing in it
If I tell you that you
If I tell you that you are not you, and you, as you perceive it
Does not exist, as you perceive it. Then can you accept that? How would you feel
The the reason why we feel that this eye exist, and we believe it so firmly, is because we have a mind
This mind exists because it’s build up on all theSensory perception, we perceive with our eyes, with our ears, with our nose, with our body, and also with our mind
And the collection of the sensory perception collected together, we decipher from this collection that there is the existence of eye
Unfortunately everything we perceive with our sensory organs and also with our mind is an illusion
When we call it illusion it doesn’t mean it does not exist It doesn’t mean we negate its appearance
It means that it It arises only for a transien moment It arises as soon as it arises it passes it ceases
But the mistake that we made is we cling onto these s-, rising and ceasing phenomenon, and we use these phenomenon to confirm the existence of I
We use all our sensory perception to confirm that I actually exist
It may be true that it appears to happen in front of our eyes, or our sense perceives it, but what we often ignore is the fact it also ceases as at the mo-, as at the moment it arises
But we often forget the ceasing, the passing of phenomenon
We just grasp and cling onto the birth of the phenomenon, and use that Phe- Phenomenon that’s constantly rising, arising and passing, but treated as real and lasting to confirm our existence
Just like when we were doing the tea chan, you saw these tea leaves
Now tell me which one is the tea leaf
Is the dry curled up
One is the tea leaves, or the wet, immersed and opened up tea leaves is the tea leaf. Which one is the true tea leaf
The tea leaf will change, as before it encounter, before the hot water immerse it, it’s dry, but after
Immerse in hot water is opened up and extended
Now, you w- we don’t, you can’t tell me, you can’t say which one is the true tea leaf
The, when the tea leaves is dry, is tea leaf, when it is wet, is tea leaf
So, we cannot say when it’s dry, is not tea leaf, or when it’s wet, is not tea leaf
But the condition, it Continues to change, just like us, just like our life, just like our eye, is a constantly fluctuating changing state
It never stays in one
You cannot say it is or it is not, because it is both, or it is none of both
So, that leaves us back to your question. I, do I exist or not
存存在
存在
Yes it I exist
So that means the tea leaf is dry
It’s never wet or in, it’s never any other
So the I exist in a state of constantly in per- constantly fluctuating, changing, in permanent
Existence, it’s flowing, it’s never fixed, and any other phenomenon, so do any other phenomena. So, when we
Truly sees this nature, this truth, this impermanence, then we will not be so attached to a particular existence as I
Especially as girls, we’re so afraid to see our own photos twenty or thirty years ago, because by comparison, I have more wrinkles and more white hair now
When that you 20 years ago is you, and now 20 years later is also you, but they’re both also not you
As soon as we fully realize the impermanence of everything, then we wouldn’t be attached to any particular
ex-, at, any particular existence or way of who I am
